Although breast implants have drawn ire and heated controversy over the last several decades, they remain one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures among American women. According to recent industry data, breast augmentation topped the list of the most popular and frequently performed cosmetic surgeries in each of the last three years. In 2007, it was reported that nearly 350,000 women had breast augmentation in the United States alone. Although achieving an increase in the size of the breasts is the most obvious justification for undergoing breast augmentation, women who have undergone the procedure often report a wide range of motivations. For example, the issue of asymmetrical breast size - a condition in which one breast is significantly larger or smaller than the other - is a major contributing factor to breast augmentation rates.
