Safety of Silicone Implants

The safety of silicone implants is dependent on the type of implant and the procedure that is being in use to place them into the breast tissue area. Silicone implants banned in 1992 because they were thought to increase the chances of getting cancer, skin disorders or other conditions. Although the evidence to support such claims is not proven, manufacturers of these implants have changed the product to a gel based product rather than the traditional liquid. This helps to keep the silicone stationary, helping to avoid any leaks and ruptures that may occur. This also increases the amount of safety associated with these implants. Nevertheless, doctors should explain the risks associated with silicone and other types of breast implants available to the patient.

Fast Facts

  • About 49 percent of women select smooth breast implants rather than textured ones.
  • A common misconception about the textured breast implant is that the texture will lead to ripples on the skin that are unwanted.
