Implants of Patient’s Own Fat Controversial
You may have read a lot lately about the revolutionary new technique of implanting a patient’s own excess fat into their breasts, instead of gel, saline, or silicone implants. The fat is removed via liposuction from the patient’s stomach, thighs, or buttocks, and then injected back into the breasts.
This leaves the breasts looking much fuller and more natural. Also, the patient has the added benefit of losing unwanted body fat. Some doctors have said that they are much safer, because the danger of leakage does not exist. Also, they tend to be a more normal, desirable shape.
However, some are now saying that not enough research has been done to prove that this is a safe and effective breast implant method. Opponents claim that it makes mammograms much more difficult, and that there may be a higher risk for breast cancer in the patients that undergo this operation. Opinions vary, and it remains a hot topic in the field of cosmetic surgery.
As always, plastic surgery procedures are a serious affair. You should do your research and speak to a qualified plastic surgeon before you decide to have the operation.
