Italian Health Ministry Considers Banning Implants for Young Women

In a recent study, 14 percent of Italy’s 16 and 17-year-old girls said that they would definitely get breast implants. The study also showed that young Italian women also suffered from extreme deficits in self-confidence. A striking number of them found themselves to be overweight, when only a handful of girls actually were considered overweight or obese.

The Italian Health Ministry sees a problem with this and may make breast implants, unless they are for emergency purposes or major reconstructive surgery, illegal for minors. This is because research has found that until a woman hits a certain age- usually 18- her mammary glands are not yet fully developed. This means that her breasts are not done growing and that she may do damage to herself if she decides to surgically alter them.

Getting breast implants too early can lead to deformation of the breasts or a woman’s loss of her ability to breastfeed. For more information about breast implants and whether or not they are recommended in the United States, contact your plastic surgeon today!
