Silicone or Saline?

When choosing the material for breast implants, women are often given two main options- saline and silicone.  But which one is better?  Many patients do not know the difference between the two materials and the pros and cons for each one.

Saline is a completely natural mixture of salt and water.  The woman’s desired shape and size determine the amount that is implanted, but generally, it produces a material not unlike a waterbed.  Unfortunately, this material can ripple, causing a less realistic appearance.  However, if it leaks, the body absorbs the water and expels it naturally.

Silicone, on the other hand, tends to be more of a hassle.  Although the material looks and feels much more like a natural breast, if the implant bursts, the patient must go through another surgery to remove the excess silicone, as it is not absorbed by the body.  However, it is not toxic, and the patient will not be harmed by the leakage.
