Breast implant removal surgery is sometimes required to get rid of a problematic implant. The breast implant removal procedure essentially takes out the implant. However, sometimes there are implant removal side effects. Regardless of the reason for opting for breast implant removal, it’s important to understand how the procedure works and the risks involved.

Breast Implant Removal

The most common reasons for needing breast implant removal are problems related to the implant themselves. The implants can deflate, reducing their size and giving the breast an awkward shape. Sometimes, implants can shift, leaving the breasts looking off center or give them an asymmetrical look, or they can wrinkle which can also cause complications. The other possibilities are a rupture or leakage in the implant that can be hazardous to one’s health. Rupture is actually a fairly common problem with breast implants, as over time a number of factors can weaken the implants casing.

If there aren’t problems with the implants themselves, there can sometimes be issues with the way the body reacts to implants. Bleeding around the implants can result. Other possibilities can include infection, or necrosis around the breast tissue, which prevents healing. Another potential reason for breast implant removal can be a diagnosis of breast cancer, which requires that the breast implants be removed.

Breast Implant Removal Procedure

The procedure for breast implant removal only takes around 30 minutes to an hour. The surgeon will make an incision near the nipple or under the breast, and withdraw the implant through this incision. In the case of saline implants, the doctor will sometimes deflate the implant to make the removal procedure easier. The cost for this procedure is between $1,000 and $4,000.

Implant Removal Side Effects

Side effects of breast implant removal are usually quite rare, and recovery time for the procedure is quick. Usually it only takes about three weeks for a person to completely recover from breast implant removal. Possible side effects that can occur include loss of sensation in the nipple, bleeding, scarring, and excess loose skin.

One unfortunate side effect that some women sometimes suffer is depression due to the breast implant removal. This is due to having a drastic body transformation that can affect the woman’s self-image. These symptoms will usually subside in a short time. If they do not, it may be time to seek help from a licensed psychological professional.
